Goals and characteristics
This fellowship provides extensive experience in disorders of the hand, ranging from treatment of congenital and developmental anomalies to reconstructive surgery for traumatic and arthritic injuries. The fellow participates in all phases of patient care. The hand fellowship is a one-year academically based program offered in conjunction with the departments of plastic and reconstructive surgery and orthopaedic surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Reconstructive microsurgery is stressed, including microneural and free-tissue transfer. The departments of plastic and orthopaedic surgery maintain fully equipped research laboratories. The hand fellows may use the facilites under the guidance of the academic staff, and spend one-to-two weeks initally in the laboratory learning microsurgical techniques. Time in the lab may be allotted for research projects. The fellows are required to complete at least one project during their tenure. The candidate must have completed residency in plastic or orthopaedic, to be eligible for an appointment as an assistant visiting instructor, in addition to the hand surgery fellowship position. This program is an ACGME accredited program in surgery of the hand.
