Non-ACGME Congenital Cardiac Surgery Fellowship Program
Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio is accepting applications for a Congenital Cardiac Surgery Fellowship position in its three-year training program (two years with an additional optional year). The cardiac surgical program at NCH performs approximately 550 cases annually, with both national and international referrals of high complexity. The hospital is located in a park-like setting in one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States. NCH is affiliated with The Ohio State University. Program Overview
We offer a comprehensive training experience that includes an additional year for candidates who have completed at least two years of prior related training, with the potential to transition into a faculty position in the U.S.
The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in developing a clinical and academic career focused on:
- Neonatal and infant cardiac surgery
- Pediatric heart/lung transplantation
- Ventricular assist devices (VAD)
During training, fellows will be responsible for:
- Delivering clinical excellence in and outside of the operating room
- Providing exemplary patient and family care
- Contributing to a collaborative work culture
- Advancing care through research, clinical studies, and trials
Clinical Training
The fellowship provides training across all aspects of congenital cardiac surgery. Non-surgical rotations include echocardiography, interventional cardiology, perfusion, and the cardiac ICU.
Learning is primarily in the operating room, supplemented by didactic sessions with faculty, multidisciplinary case conferences, and a conference emphasizing clinico-morphologic correlation of congenital heart disease.
Fellows support nurse practitioners managing patients on the cardiac ward. Clinical responsibilities include, but are not limited to: inpatient and outpatient care on the cardiac surgery service, rounding in the CTICU and other inpatient units, thoracic organ procurement, assistance with thoracic transplants, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), ventricular assist device (VAD) management, and a wide variety of cardiothoracic and vascular surgical procedures.
Our department also leads one of the busiest hybrid programs worldwide for hypoplastic left heart syndrome and variants, and the busiest in the United States. Fellows will perform pediatric cardiac surgery procedures under the supervision of five experienced cardiac surgeons, following the fellowship curriculum and Division Chief’s discretion.
The position includes in-house call and ECMO coverage. Compensation is competitive
Minimum Requirements:
Foreign applicants must have completed national certification in cardiothoracic surgery and possess ECFMG certification. Preference will be given to applicants who have passed all three steps of USMLE (or are in the process of obtaining Step III results).
- M.D. or equivalent degree; U.S./Canada medical school graduates or ECFMG certification for international graduates
- Successful completion of a certified cardiothoracic surgical training program and/or pediatric cardiac surgery fellowship
- Eligibility for state medical licensure before the start of training
- BC/BE of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery or equivalent (preferred)
