The Division of Vascular Surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is seeking a Vascular Surgeon at the Assistant/Associate Professor level, depending on experience and academic record, to join our vascular surgery division.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will have a broad range of open and endovascular skills. This position is dedicated to our practice in Decatur, Illinois, primarily serving Decatur Memorial Hospital (DMH). Practice opportunities are diverse, spanning the full spectrum of vascular disorders and their diagnosis and management. The four other surgeons in the Division currently practice at DMH in addition to their responsibilities in Springfield, IL and will continue to do so. 1.5 FTE APPs support our practice in Decatur. Decatur Memorial Hospital (DMH) is a licensed and fully accredited 300-bed facility. DMH has outstanding open surgical facilities and a modern hybrid operating suite. Our practice currently operates an outpatient clinic on the DMH campus with a dedicated support staff that also houses other SIU surgical specialists.
DMH has more than 2,300 dedicated employees and 300 physicians. DMH has been recognized as a 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospital from IBM Watson Health. DMH is an affiliate hospital of the Memorial Health System (MHS). MHS includes Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, a 500-bed Magnet-designated teaching hospital which offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services. MHS hospital affiliates are located in Decatur, Jacksonville, Taylorville, and Lincoln. The MHS medical practice group is Memorial Physician Services (MPS), which performs nearly 200,000 clinic visits in the Decatur area and over 240,000 clinic visits in the Springfield area annually.
The SIU Division of Vascular Surgery also practices at two 500 bed hospitals located in Springfield, IL Educational facilities, an outpatient clinic, and outpatient vascular laboratory on the same campus of one facility in Springfield. The Division also directs an ICAVL inpatient and outpatient Vascular Ultrasound Lab that is expanding to DMH. In addition, division faculty practice in three hospital-based wound centers which provide ample opportunities for clinical activity in CLTI and diabetic foot disease.
SIU has a rich academic history in vascular surgery and long-standing commitment to surgical education. The Division of Vascular Surgery has an integrated vascular residency which has been accredited since 2011. Research opportunities are also abundant. There is strong outcomes research collaboration between the university and our primary hospital, positioning us well for future healthcare changes and academic productivity. We have a strong collaboration with the SIU Center for Clinical Research, which provides expertise in clinical research and clinical trials, including statistics, database analysis and management for outcomes research. The section of Vascular Surgery and Department of Surgery are fully committed to providing support for a candidate’s academic interests. Decatur has a population of approximately 70,000 residents, and is the largest city in Macon County, pop. 106,000. There are many options for recreation and entertainment, including festivals, art galleries, museums, parks, sports complexes and golf courses. Major metropolitan areas of St. Louis, Chicago and Indianapolis are within easy driving distance. Educational choices abound – families can select from public, private and religious schools based on individual needs, including 2 Montessori schools for pre-school through middle school aged children. There are also 3 dedicated community homeschooling organizations offering resources. Decatur has excellent amenities for residents of all ages, and is affordable, with a cost of living index of 82.8, below the US average of 100.
