MANUS Center

Company Overview

The MANUS Center located in Vienna Virginia consists of a practice of one orthopaedic hand surgeon (CAQ),one CHT Occupational Hand Therapist, a business manager, receptionist, 2 medical assistants (all college educated) and a transcriptionist. It is an practice devoted solely the practice of upper extremity surgery.

Company History

The MANUS Center was originally founded in 1990 by Dr. Thomas Shepler with the idea of creating an Orthopaedic Center of Hand Surgery in the private world dedicated to not only the practice of excellent hand surgery but also to the idea of "relaying to others" (high school students, pre physician assistant or nurse practicianer students, premed students, or orthopaedic residents) "what we have been lucky to learn"!

We have created a library of pertinent hand surgery literature dating back to 1976, an information system (which is accessible from your home) that contains all of the initial workups of our patients as well as admission history and physicals plus a searchable database that contains every patient (and their demographics and clinical information in great detail) that we have seen in any capacity and an additional database that contains every operative procedure done since 1990 (and in some cases going back to 1976). We also have preserved every radiograph taken since 1990.

We have attempted to combine private and academic medicine and have lectured Orthopaedic Residents from Georgetown University Hospital an hour a week for the past 19 years. We have a practice designed to not only have a new member flourish in hand surgery but also have provided an avenue to "give back" to others less knowledgeable.

Another benefit is being associated with not only a senior orthopaedic hand surgeon (34 years in practice), but also with a very able staff for which every medical assistant is a college graduate. Living 13 miles from the center of Washington D.C. is an exciting endeavor. This is a wonderful part of the country to reside. The area is culturally rich, and the patients are extraordinary. The school systems are superb. It is located in a wonderful and safe town called Vienna (Va).
